WILF To be able to see the difference between
the present tense and the past tense. You must be
able to recognise 3 different tenses for grade C
and above.
2You have already learnt many phrases for leisure
activities. These have been in the present tense.
For example
I play football
Je joue au football
I watch TV
Je regarde la télé
I listen to music
Jécoute de la musique
I do skiing
Je fais du ski
I go to the pool
Je vais à la piscine
3Look at the same phrases, but this time they are
in the past tense.
Jai joué au football
I played football
Jai regardé la télé
I watched TV
Jai écouté de la musique
I listened to music
Jai fait du ski
I did skiing
Je suis allé à la piscine
I went to the pool

5In the present tense, there is a subject and a
verb.

In the past tense, there is a subject, an
auxiliary verb and a past participle.
Jai joué au football
Mostly, the auxiliary verb comes from avoir
(to have), but in some cases it will come from
être (to be).

6The key to recognising the past tense is to look
out for an auxiliary verb and a past participle.

order to make a phrase in the past tense. Match

English.
