Division

• Division is mainly taught in two ways - short
  division and chunking.

An example of short division is 2645 5
_______________ 5 ) 2 6
4 5 First 5 goes into 2 zero times with 2
remainders so write 0 above the 2 and carry 2
across to the next number (which becomes 26 in
this case)
__0_____________ 5 ) 2 26 4
5 5 goes into 26 five times with 1 left over

_0_ 5__________ 5 ) 2 26 14 5
Then repeat the process
__0__5__2__9___ 5 ) 2 26 14 45

Chunking
This a popular method taught in many primary
schools. It involves taking easy multiples out of
a number.
E.g. 4 8 3 0 1 5.
1 5 ) 4 8 3 0 -1 5 0 0
(100 x 15) 3 3 3 0
-1 5 0 0 (100 x 15)
1 8 3 0 -1 5 0 0
(100 x 15) 0 3 3 0
-3 0 0 (20 x 15)
3 0 -3
0 (2 x 15) 0 0
To find the answer, the numbers which have been
multiplied by 15 are added together. 100 100
