Multiple ChoiceHow much time?
  • 55 Minutes
  • That is only 40 seconds for each!
  • Do not linger over any question you cannot
    understand. Come back to it if you have time.

Should I answer all questions?
  • MC Score Number correct
  • less ¼ penalty for each wrong answer.
  • No wild guesses but if you can eliminate two or
    more possible answers, then pick what looks best.

No Choice of Essays
  • You must answer all three essays
  • There is usually a choice
  • WITHIN
  • Essays unless the topic is very well treated in
    all textbooks.

How are the essays scored?
  • CORE SCORING
  • 7 points for basic core
  • 2 points for expanded core
  • You must earn all basic core points to be
    eligible for expanded core points
  • You cannot lose points.

DBQ Basic Core Points
  • 1 acceptable thesis
  • 1 using all documents understands
    almost all.
  • 2 appropriate evidence from all but 1 doc
  • or 1 for all but 2 docs.
  • 1 POV in at least 2 docs.
  • 1 analytical grouping of documents
  • 1 identifies the need for an additional doc

Acceptable Thesis ?
  • Does MORE than merely restate the question.
  • It really says something!

  • Use documents in a manner that proves you
    understand them.

  • Dont just repeat the documents, use them to
    answer the question.

  • Constantly explain

  • things are as you say they are.

  • In analyzing documents you must explain
  • WHY
  • The authors believe what they are saying in the
    document.

  • Place all documents with similar opinions in one
    paragraph.
  • Write real paragraphs.
  • Use all documents.
  • Again No laundry list.

  • All three essays demand a thesis be stated in the
    FIRST paragraph.

  • To historically analyze is to explain WHY
    something is what you say it is or to explain HOW
    something caused something.
  • Analysis addresses cause and effect.
