  • If you were there
  • Your father, a wandering trader, has decided it
    is time to settle down. He offers the family a
    choice between two cities. In one city everyone
    wants to be athletic, tough, strong. The other
    city is different. There, youd be admired if
    you could think deeply and speak persuasively, if
    you knew a lot about astronomy or history, or if
    you sand and played beautiful music.
  • Which city would you choose? Why?

  • Big Idea- The two most powerful city-states in
    Greece, Sparta and Athens, had very different
    cultures and became bitter enemies in the 400s
    B.C.

  • Army dominated life
  • Self discipline obedience
  • Served in Army till age 60
  • Believed comforts made people weak
  • Women trained like men
  • Ran Sparta when men were off fighting
  • Government run by 2 kings, who jointly ran the
    army
  • Govt set up to control Helots
  • Athenians stressed army but their training was
    not devoted all to the army
  • Served in Army for 2 years
  • Besides training they learned to write, count,
    sing, play music
  • Rich boys learned rhetoric, philosophy, geometry,
    astronomy
  • Women had almost no rights.
  • Men did not think women needed an education

Peloponnesian War (27 years)
  • After the Persian war ended
  • City-states formed alliances, known as Delian
    league
  • Defend against further attacks trade routes on
    Aegean
  • Athens strongest member, used from alliance to
    rebuilt Athens
  • Sparta formed the Peloponnesian league, angry of
    Athens power they declared war.
  • Sparta marched to Athens
  • Burned their crops, hoping Athens would run out
    of food surrender.
  • Much of Athens navy was destroyed in the war
  • Sparta eventually won, a weakened Greece was left
    for invasion
