Introduction
  • GIs stood for Government issued or general
    issued.
  • GIs used to stand for galvanized iron.
  • In WWII GI products provided our soldiers and
    ally soldiers necessary food and supplies to
    fight the war, when other ally countries couldnt
    provide these necessities. These soldiers then
    referred to themselves as GI soldiers or simply
    GIs.

Hardships
  • Had to leave the comfort of their homes
  • Training could not prepare the GIs for war
  • They had a constant feeling of fear
  • Boredom became the enemy
  • The power of friendship

Hardships
  • Many returned physically, mentally, and
    emotionally wounded.
  • Lack of jobs when they returned home.
  • Woman had taken over the roles of men so men were
    not needed.

Opportunities
  • Were offered the opportunity to show their
    patriotism in the war
  • Came home with new sense of pride for their
    country
  • Were treated like heroes when they returned home

Key Terms
  • GI- Better known as General Issue used to
    describe soldiers of the United States Army and
    Airmen of the United States Army Air Forces.
  • Reception Center- An army reception center within
    a huge complex where men had their first taste of
    military life.
  • Drill Instructors- Had little as eight weeks to
    train soldiers for battle. Would train soldiers
    for 9 hours or so a day by teaching them tent
    pitching, map reading, guard duty, sanitation,
    weapon care, and endless physical training.
