PLANT AND ANIMAL CELLS

CELL WALL PLANT
  • A thick, rigid membrane that surrounds a plant
    cell
  • Gives the cell most of its support and structure
  • Bonds with other cell walls to form the structure
    of the plant

3
CELL MEMBRANE
  • Thin layer of protein and fat that surrounds the
    cell
  • Semi permeable, allowing some substances to pass
into the cell and blocking others.
  •

4
CELL CROSS SECTION
5
Chloroplast
  • An elongated or disc-shaped organelle containing
    chlorophyll
  • Photosynthesis (in which energy from sunlight is
converted into chemical energy - food) takes
    place in the chloroplasts

6
Cytoplasm
  • The jellylike material outside the cell nucleus
in which the organelles are located.

7
Endoplasmic Reticulum
  • Folded membrane that moves materials around in
    the cell.
  • Extends from the nucleus to the cell membrane and
takes up quite a bit of space.
  • Similar to a system of conveyor belts in a
    business.
  • Act as tunnels in which materials move from one
place to another within the cell.

8
SMOOTH /ROUGH ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM
  • Smooth ER transports materials through the cell
  • Rough ER is covered with ribosome's that give it
    a rough appearance

9
Golgi Bodies
  • Are stacks of membrane-covered sacs that package
and move proteins to the outside of the cell.
  • Golgi bodies are the packaging and secreting
    organelles of the cell.

10
Lysosome
  • Also called cell vesicles
  • Spherical organelles surrounded by a membrane
  • They contain digestive enzymes
  • Where the digestion of cell nutrients takes place

11
Mitochondria
  • Where energy is released.
  • Spherical to rod-shaped organelles with a double
    membrane
  • Membrane is infolded many times, forming a series
    of projections (called cristae)
  • Converts the energy stored in glucose into ATP
    (adenosine triphosphate) for the cell.
  •

12
NucleusThe Manager
  • Spherical body containing many organelles,
    including the nucleolus
  • Controls many of the functions of the cell
  • Contains DNA (in chromosomes)
  • Surrounded by the nuclear membrane

13
Nucleolus
  • An organelle within the nucleus
  • Where ribosomal RNA is produced
  • Some cells have more than one nucleolus

14
Nuclear membrane
  • The membrane that surrounds the nucleus.

15
Ribosome's
  • Small structures in the cytoplasm that create
    proteins.
  • Ribosome's are either free floating in the
cytoplasm of a cell or attached to endoplasmic
    reticulum in a cell.

16
Vacuole
  • Fluid-filled, membrane-surrounded cavities inside
    a cell
  • Fills with food being digested and waste material
that is on its way out of the cell
  • Like your suitcase, a vacuole is a temporary
    storage space for the cell.
