Title: CHEMISTRY

1
CHEMISTRY
  • What Is It?

2
Learning Goal
  • I CAN give a working definition of CHEMISTRY,
provide reasons for studying it, and identify the
    five main branches.

3
What do you think of when you where the word
CHEMISTRY?
  • In a 3 to 5 sentence paragraph, DESCRIBE what the
word CHEMISTRY makes you think of.

4
What is CHEMISTRY?
  • In your own words, WRITE your own DEFINITION of
    CHEMISTRY.

5
Our class DEFINITION of CHEMISTRY
  • CHEMISTRY is the study of matter its
  • COMPOSITION
  • STRUCTURE
  • and the CHANGES it undergoes.

6
Why Study Chemistry Anyway?
  • There are many reasons to study CHEMISTRY (or any
    science for that matter)
  • to understand and explain the natural world.
  • to become an informed and responsible citizen.
  • to prepare for a career.

7
What Do CHEMISTS Study?
  • Traditionally, the study of CHEMISTRY is divided
    into FIVE BRANCHES.
  • Sometimes branches OVERLAP each other.
  • ORGANIC CHEMISTRY the field of chemistry
dedicated to studying CARBON BASED COMPOUNDS.
  • -Carbon compounds generally come from ONCE LIVING
    ORGANISMS.

8
  • 2. INORGANIC CHEMISTRY the study of
  • substances that DO NOT contain
  • carbon.
  • 3. ANALYTICAL CHERMISTRY the
  • branch of chemistry that studies
  • COMPOSITION of substances.
  • (WHAT is in it and HOW MUCH)
  • 4. BIOCHEMISTRY the field of
  • chemistry that studies CHEMICAL
  • PROCESSES in LIVING ORGANISMS.
  • 5. PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY the study of the
  • MECHANISMS (ways) in which CHEMICAL
  • REACTIONS occur and the CHANGES THAT
  • MATERIALS undergo as a result.

9
Working with a partner..
  • Read each of the following descriptions and
determine which branch of chemistry would be
    involved
  • 1. A lab determines the mineral
  • composition of a moon rock.
  • ANALYTICAL (What and How Much)

10
  • 2. A student graduate students studies
  • the process of photosynthesis in a
  • botany (plant) lab.
  • -BIOCHEMISTRY
  • (Chemical processes in living organisms)

11
  • 3. A research lab isolates a new
  • compound from crude oil.
  • ORGANIC (Carbon-based compounds)

12
  • 4. Researchers study how a series of
  • different enzymes affect the rate of the
  • decomposition of bee venom.
  • PHYSICAL - study of how reactions occur.

13
QUICK REVIEW
  • What was todays LEARNING GOAL?
  • I CAN give a working definition of CHEMISTRY,
provide reasons for studying it and name the five
    main branches.

14
Exit Slip (Formative Assessment)
  • On a POST-IT NOTE you have at your table, tell me
THREE THINGS you learned today about CHEMISTRY.
  • Put your name on the BACK of the post it and TURN
IT IN WHEN THE BELL RINGS on your way out!
