Title: INTRO. TO PLANT REPRODUCTION

1
CHAPTER 10
  • INTRO. TO PLANT REPRODUCTION

2
ASEXUAL
  • Requires only 1 parent
  • Creates exact duplicate of parent
  • Can be grown from cuttings
  • Plants can spread by stems traveling underground
    producing new plants

3
SEXUAL
  • Requires 2 parents
  • Sperm fertilizes egg making a zygote
  • Wind, animals and water move sperm to egg

4
Reproductive organs
  • Can be on same plant or different plants
  • If on same plant can reproduce by itself - still
    exchange sex cells
  • Separate male and female plants must exchange sex
    cells to form seed

5
Plant life cycles
  • Starts with fertilization, becomes mature plant
    to produce seeds, dies off
  • Sex cells form by meiosis and are haploid
  • Plants have a 2 stage lifecycle

6
Stage 1-gametophyte stage
  • Meiosis produces haploid sex cells called spores
  • Spores divide to form plant structures or an
    entire new plant
  • Some new cells reproduce and make more sex cells

7
Stage 2-sporophyte stage
  • Begins with fertilization of egg from stage 1 by
    sperm
  • These cells formed are diploid (complete set of
    chromosomes)
  • Some cells in these plants can make sex cells
thru meiosis and the cycle begins again
