Survey Objectives
  • to provide information on ethnic diversity in
    Canada
  • to provide information to better understand how
    Canadians of different ethnic backgrounds
    interpret and report their ethnicity
  • to explore various ways to measure ethnicity in
    order to inform future data collection.

Planning Assumptions
  • 2001 Census will provide frame for the sample
    selection
  • Sampling unit to be individual
  • Persons aged 15 and over
  • Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing (CATI)
  • Achieved sample size of 40,000 individuals
  • 35 minute interviews conducted in 9 languages

  • Select the sample based on answers to the 2001
    Census ethnic origin and place of birth questions
  • Start with broad categories of ethnic responses
  • Use the place of birth variables to further
    stratify by generational status in Canada (1st,
    2nd 3)
