  • 1/2 3/4
  • 5 - 9

5
Adding Integers
  • Power Standard 12
  • Fluently and accurately add, subtract, multiply,
    and divide rational numbers
  • Learning Target 2
  • Accurately add/subtract integers

6
Definitions
  • (Right Side INB)
  • Absolute Value- The distance of a number from
    zero on a number line
  • Integers- The set of whole numbers and their
    opposites

7
Adding Integers with a Number Line
  • Numbers to the RIGHT of zero are POSITIVE
  • Numbers to the LEFT of zero are NEGATIVE
  • Start with an open circle on the first number
  • Move in the direction of the second number

8
Try Some use a number line
  • 9 (- 4)
  • -7 3
  • 5 (-10)
  • - 4 4

2 minutes

Examples
  • Same sign
  • Find the sum of absolute values, use sign of
    original numbers
  • (-4) (-6)
  • 4 6 10
  • Original signs were negative, so
  • (-4) (-6) -10

10
Examples
  • Different signs
  • Find the difference of absolute values, keep sign
of integer with greater absolute value
  • 5 (-7)
  • 7 - 5 2
  • (-7) has greater absolute value so
  • 5 (-7) -2

11
Guided Practice
  • Compare. Write lt, gt, or .
  • -14 9 ____ -6
  • 42 (-25) ___ 20
  • 14 (-14) _____ 0

12
Zero Pair
  • A number its opposite 0
  • 4 (-4) 0
  • -100 100 0
  • 24 (-24) 0
  • -7,000,000 7,000,000 0
