Teacher dead in Nevada school shooting
2
A Nevada middle school student shot and killed a
teacher and wounded two students Monday before
fatally shooting himself in the nation's latest
horrific act of school violence. Police said the
teacher, 45-year-old Michael Landsberry, at
Sparks Middle School died trying to protect
students. Landsberry was a popular math teacher
at the middle school. According to a witness,
the student was pointing a gun at the teacher.
After the teacher told him to put it down, and
the student fired a shot ... at the teacher and
the teacher fell and everybody ran away." Both of
the wounded students were hospitalized in stable
condition Monday night. They were shot in the
cafeteria and in a hallway. One was shot in the
stomach, the other in the shoulder. The gunman
eventually shot and killed himself. The boy,
whom authorities have not identified, took his
parents' handgun to school. Police said today
they are hoping to interview the estimated 20 to
30 witnesses who heard or saw gunfire and hope by
talking to students they will be able to
determine the suspect's motive and whether he
shot indiscriminately or was targeting specific
victims.
