bilaterals.org is a collaborative website to
share information, critical analysis and
strategies for action against bilateral trade and
investment agreements. Bilateral treaties create
new obligations, especially for developing
countries, on a range of issues privileges for
foreign investors, market access for some
agricultural products, deregulation of
environmental laws, weak standards on labour
rights, opening up of services and cultural
sectors to foreign control, and ever stronger
intellectual property rights regimes. They are
used by countries like the US, Australia, Japan,
Canada, New Zealand and the EU to get faster,
deeper and more comprehensive commitments than is
possible in a slow and fractious multilateral
forum like the WTO. bilaterals.org was launched
in September 2004 by a number of activist
research groups as an open and collective
website. It contains news articles about ongoing
negotiations, background studies on the
implications of different trends and agreements,
a treaty library, links, reports about people's
mobilisations and a discussion forum. You are
welcome to join and publish your own materials or
documents you consider important to make
available to others.
