2- The city was founded in 1108 as a fortress by
Vladimir Monomakh. In XII-XIV centuries it served
as the centre of cultural and religious life as
well as the civic centre of the North-Eastern
Russia. Vladimir hosted the all-Russian
gatherings of Princes.

- Vladimir replaced Kiev as the Grand Principality
of Russia. - 1238
- Vladimir falls under siege of the Mongols who
destroyed most of the city and killed most of its
inhabitants. Vladimir crumbled once again under
the Tartars in 1293. The city recovered each
time, though its realm disintegrated into small
princedoms with Moscow increasingly dominant. - 1783
- Vladimir Central Prison is built on the eastern
side of Vladimir. - 1992
- The American Home is officially established and
dedicated in Vladimir.
4The Coat of Arms
The oldest known coat of arms in Russia belongs
to Vladimir. The image of the lion as the emblem
of Yuri Dolgoruky goes back to the 12th century.
The head of the lion is crowned and there is a
cross in its paws.
5Nowadays
The population of Vladimir is about 360,000
people. It is still has administrative,
industrial and cultural significance. Vladimir is
178 km north-east from Moscow, on high left bank
of the river Klyazma. The area is 60 square
kilometers. Nowadays Vladimir is the center of
the Vladimir area. It is an University city
there are drama and doll theatres, a
philharmonic society.
6Main Attractions
- The Uspenski (Assumption) Cathedral is a world
famous monument of religious architecture. The
Cathedral was first built in 1158 - 1160 under
Grand Prince Andrey Bogolubsky on the high bank
of the river Klyazma in the town centre. - The Dmitrievski Cathedral was built in 1194
1197. The Cathedral walls are richly covered with
sculptural decorations.
7Main Attractions
- The Zolotye Vorota (Golden Gates) is a unique
monument. It is a white-stone construction of
1158-1164 built under Vladimir Grand Prince
Andrey Bogolubsky as the main defense and
ceremonial entryway tower of the restored by him
fortress. Nothing remained of the other four
outside fortress gates, only the Golden - Gates did.
