Title: Mrs. Ferrari 9th Grade English

1
Classroom expectations and norms
  • Mrs. Ferrari 9th Grade English

2
Terminology
  • Community
  • A group of people who accept responsibility for
    their own actions
  • Process concerns
  • Respect each other
  • Support each other
  • Abide by a universal set of policies during
    interactions

3
Second important word
  • Norms
  • a standard or pattern, especially of social
behavior, that is typical or expected of a group
  • Established by the group at the onset of existence

4
Third important word
  • Community Agreement
  • Sets the tone for an inclusive environment
  • Provide stability through the use of guidelines
that the majority of the group approves

5
Purpose of a classroom community agreement
  • Serves as a proactive way for the members of a
community to voice their expectations of each
    through communication, compromise, and
    commitment.
  • Through the creation of a community agreement,
the concept of holding people accountable shifts
from ME as the teacher to YOU the students.
  • This agreement empowers and encourages you the
student to take responsibility by developing a
    mutually agreed upon respect.

6
My Role in this
  • So what is the point of having Mrs. Ferrari here
if the ownership of behavior is on the
    students???
  • GOOD QUESTION!

7
Anyways
  • After the obvious that you all want to hear my
melodious voice as much as possible, Im here to
simply facilitate when a community member does
not respond positively to a confrontation or
    breaks a classroom norm.

8
Video break
  • Typically, Community Agreements are done in dorm
settings. Students literally live in closer
proximity to each other than we are in our
    classroom.
  • Take a look at what happens when establishing
    norms goes wrong
  • PLAY THE CLIP MRS. FERRARI!

9
Classroom norms
  • Eerily similar to classroom behaviors that we
    discussed and demonstrated yesterday
  • Some examples
  • Raise hand to talk/answer question
  • Dont get up during the middle of class/teaching
    moments

10
Your thoughts
  • What are some class norms that you think are
    important?
  • Break into your groups and do some brainstorming
as to Classroom Norms that you think should be
    followed by everyone.
  • 10 Minutes Tops!

11
Classroom Agreements
  • How are norms different from a classroom
    agreement?
  • GOOD QUESTION!
  • Norms makeup the agreed upon behavior that we
    will exhibit in the classroom.
  • The Classroom Agreement is simply a listing of
specific norms and the philosophy behind each one.

12
Norm Philosophy
  • (Norm)Treat others as you wish to be treated.
  • (Philosophy)Respecting others bodies,
belongings, and opinions makes them feel valued
and important. This leads to a stronger sense of
    classroom community.
