Title: Solids, Liquids, Gases

1
Solids, Liquids, Gases
2
  • Everything around us is made up of atoms. These
tiny, little particles of matter which, with
other atoms either the same or different types,
form molecules. But what makes the difference
between liquid, solid and gas substances?

3
Solids
  • In solids, the force which holds the molecules
together, called the force of cohesion, is very
strong and the molecules can only vibrate without
    changing position.

When a substance is a solid, its atoms or
molecules are held in fixed positions and it has
a constant shape.
4
Liquids
  • In liquids, the molecules can slide on on the
other, continually changing position but keeping
    very close.

When a substance is a liquid it has weaker
internal forces, strong enough to hold it
together, but not strong enough to maintain a
constant shape.
5
Gases
  • In gas, the molecules, kept together by a very
weak force, move in all directions and there is a
lot of space between one molecule and another.

When a substance is a gas the atoms behave
randomly and the gas expands to fill the
available space
