Freuds Theory of Personality

• Three Stages
• Id
• Ego
• Superego

The id

• Basic biological drives and need which require
  immediate attention
• Like a baby crying for food or water
• As child grows older the id is suppressed
• Does not go away!

The Ego

• Rational component of personality that regulates
  the desires of the id
• Child may want a bottle of pop and asks parent if
  he/she will buy it for them
• Ego channels energy and desires of the id in ways
  where they are most likely to be met
• Manages the id and superego (desires vs. morals)

The Superego

• The conscience which contains ethical and moral
  elements
• Understands values and morals of society and
  allows child to participate therein
• Child understands that although their parent says
  they will not buy them a bottle of pop, it is
  wrong to steal
• Counteracts the raw id

Examples

• Come up with five different situations in your
  own lives (or that of someone else)
• Examine the way in which the id, ego, and
  superego influence the behaviour of the subject
  in each.
• Choose one of these situations and draw a short
  comic strip outlining the interaction between the
  three components.
