Scopes Monkey Trial (1925)
  • John Scopes A Tennessee High School teacher who
    taught the Theory of Evolution as fact
  • Illegal in Tenn.
  • The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) agreed
    to defend Scopes
  • Clarence Darrow (lawyer representing Scopes) vs.
    William Jennings Bryan (counsel for the
    prosecution)
  • Scopes found guilty and fined 100
  • Trial seen as major case in science vs. religion
  • Darrow examination of Bryan resulted in decrease
    in fundamentalism

  • 18th Amendment (1919) Outlaws the sale,
    transportation and consumption of alcohol
  • Alcohol seen as the reason for a decrease in
    religious morals and increase in unemployment
  • 1920s Speakeasies (secret bars that served
    bootlegged alcohol) arose through major cities in
    the US
  • Crime rose
  • Police forces struggled to enforce prohibition
  • 1933 Prohibition repealed

    immigration (repealed in 1943)

    segregated schools
