THIEVES is an acronym that stands for a method of
previewing reading material. It works well for
science texts and saves a great deal of time.
  • THIEVES stands for
  • Title
  • Headings
  • Introduction
  • Every first sentence in a paragraph
  • Visuals andVocabulary
  • End-of-chapter questions
  • Summary

3
How to use THIEVES
  • Read the title (T) of the chapter to be read, and
then all the headings/subheadings (H) in the
    chapter.
  • Read the introduction (I) to the chapter as it
will give you an idea of the direction the
    subject is going.
  • Read -- aloud -- every first sentence in every
    paragraph (E) in the chapter.
  • Flip through the assigned pages and carefully
examine every graph, chart, diagram or table.
These are the visuals (V). Be sure to read the
    legends that accompany them!

Using THIEVES, part 2
  • If the vocabulary (V) is highlighted, set off in
the margins or noted in some other way, it saves
you a great deal of effort. Read the vocabulary
    words.
  • Go to the end of the chapter (E) and find the
questions that pertain to the reading. Do not
answer the questions, just look them over as they
will indicate the important points in the
    reading.
  • Lastly, if your book provides a section or
    chapter summary (S), read it!
