Title: The Church as teacher

1
The Church as teacher
  • Chapter 4 lesson 5
  • pp. 125-129
  • HW. P. 141 20, 23, 24, 25

2
What is the magisterium?
  • Ordinary and universal teaching authority of the
Pope, and Bishops in communion with him, which
guides the Church without error in matters of
Faith and Morals by interpreting Sacred Scripture
    and Sacred Tradition.
  • Read p. 134 Reading 2 and discuss.
  • Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition together
are known as the Deposit of Faith.
  • The Magisterium does not reveal new truths,
    Revelation ended with the Apostles.

3
The Deposit of Faith
  • There is only one source of Revelation God
  • The content of revelation is found in Sacred
    Tradition and Sacred Scripture.
  • Sacred Tradition is the Word of God, received
from Christ and passed on without error by the
Church with the assistance of the Holy Spirit.
  • Sacred Scripture is the Word of God written down
under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

4
Three stages of forming the Gospels
  • The actual life and teaching of Jesus.
  • Oral Tradition The apostles and their
representatives continued to teach and baptize
orally well before the New Testament books were
    written and brought together.
  • Written Gospels Under the influence of the Holy
Spirit the sacred authors selected from among the
many things Christ said and did and committed
    them to writing.

5
Infallibility and Indefectibility
  • Infallibility The inability to teach error
  • Pertains to Sacred Tradition, Sacred Scripture,
the teaching of the Apostles and their successors
on matters pertaining to Faith and Morals.
  • We are expected to hold fast to these teachings
    with obedience of faith.
  • Indefectibility The Church will always teach the
Gospel of Christ without error even in spite of
the defects of her members, both ordained and lay.

6
Doesnt Tradition Change?
  • Wasnt Marys Immaculate Conception defined in
    1854?
  • Wasnt her assumption not made a dogma until
    1950?
  • No and No.
  • The concepts were always there. The Pope spoke
infallibly and used the terms in those years to
define what was always a truth.
