  • Football - an inherently dangerous sport -
    injuries are bound to happen
  • As the number and severity of injuries increased
    the need for trained medical staff increased

    over the years?
  • Early 1800s
  • no rules
  • no pads
  • no helmets
  • no refs
  • 50 players on the field
  • Result - MANY serious injuries and deaths

    dangerous

  • and hopefully reduce the number of
  • injuries

  • 1902 AMA declared football to be as hazardous as
    war with almost as many casualties
  • President Roosevelt vowed to abolish football
  • As a result of political pressure football
    changed dramatically in 1902
  • new rules
  • officials introduced to the game
  • helmets and padding required

  • 1950s - doctors not sympathetic to football
    players
  • bed rest, crutches or canes or just stop playing
  • Coaches and Doctors did not work well together
    coaches began to discourage athletes from going
    to the doctor

    football players they were seeing
  • New associations founded to focus on athletes
  • The new specialty of SPORTS MEDICINE was born in
    the 1960s

  • AAOS - 1964
  • AOSSM - 1971
  • All of these organizations focused on athletes
    how to treat injuries and also reduce their risks
