• What are the major steps of the digestive system?

The Teeth

• starts in the mouth
• Teeth structures have adapted to their diets
• -Carnivores need canine teeth to tear
• through flesh
• -Herbivores need molars to grind
• -Omnivores need both

Teeth

• Deciduous teeth (baby teeth)eventually replaced
  by adult teeth
• Incisors front, used to bite into food
• Canines longest teeth used for tearing
• Premolars/ molars in the back used for crushing
  and grinding, flatter in herbivores
• Determine an animals age

Glands

• The first used
• Tongue
• -made of skeletal muscle
• -forms a bolus
• Saliva aids in digestion break down

Monogastric

• Single stomached
• Fundus storage and allows stomach to expand
• Rugae lining
• Antrum leads into small intestine
• Pylorus controls flow to ingesta into small
  intestine

Ruminant

• 4 different compartments in stomach
• Rumen grinds up food, stirs the contents
• Reticulum regurgitates
• Omasum separates water and large particles,
  increases surface area
• Abomasum true stomach

• Has enzymes that breakdown toxins
• Seizures blood level declines, slow breakdown of
  toxins

Small Intestine

• Absorb most of the nutrients
• Liver and gallbladder communicate through bile
• -bile produced by live

Large Intestine

• Absorbs water and salt
• Begins with cecum
• Cecum is larger in horses
• spends 12-24 hours in colon
• Diarrhea time is shortened
• Constipation time is lengthened
• Fills rectum and stimulates anus

• Begins with nausea
• Then strong abdominal contractions
