Title: Energy-efficient distribution transformers

1
Energy-efficient distribution transformers
  • Case study

2
Introduction
  • Distribution transformers for industrial
    customers
  • Case study of a 1600 kVA energy-efficient
  • transformer
  • Ward Berghmans
  • Design Manager Distribution
    Transformers
  • PAUWELS TRAFO

3
Topics of discussion
  • The population of newly installed distribution
    transformers
  • The 1600 kVA energy-efficient transformer
  • Performance data comparison
  • Annual Energy savings
  • Financial benefits against purchase price
  • Environmental impact
  • Conclusion

4
1.The population of newly installed
distribution transformers
  • Three market segments
  • Utilities (EdF, Enel, RWE, )
  • Light industry ( OEM, installers)
  • Heavy industry ( private, contractors)
  • Estimated figures for newly installed
    distribution transformers in Western Europe

1.The population of newly installed
distribution transformers
  • Estimated quantities yr 2000 (3Ø only)

2.2 Annual savings
The annual kWh consumption is obtained by
multiplying the watt rating by 8,76 11475
kWh annual savings 1033 at 0.09 / kWh

Lifetime saving _at_ 25 years gt 287,5 MWh
gt 25825
Remark 30 or 40 years in service is not uncommon
8
gt within 12 to 15 of the total life time of a
distribution transformer
2.3 Financial benefits against purchase price
Price premium 3610 Payback period
3610 / 1033 /yr 3.5 years

2.4 Environmental impact
Efficient use of energy decreases the
greenhouse gas emissions without
sacrificing power output.
CO2 emissions _at_ 0.4 kg CO2 / kWh CO2
reduction 120 Mt

3. Conclusion
Today the technology is available to reduce
in a substantial way the losses of transformers.
This loss reduction would contribute in the
overall green house cut-back programs
This case study was based upon the 1600 kVA
transformer installed in July 1998 at the Allied
Signal production facility at Waterford (Eire)
