Who was William Penn?
  • Born in England on October 24, 1644.
  • Joined the Society of Friends, a religious group
    called the Quakers
  • Practiced religious tolerance
  • Was kicked out of school and went to jail six
    times for his beliefs

3
So how did he get a colony?
  • Williams father, Admiral Penn, was rich!
  • He loaned the King of England some money.
  • When Admiral Penn died, he left everything to
    William.
  • That meant the king needed to repay the loan to
    William!

4
A New Idea!
  • William thought that he could create a new
    colony.
  • In his colony, everyone would be able to practice
    their own religion.
  • He named it Pennsylvania, or Penns Woods, after
    his father.

5
Planning the Colony
  • Penn wanted everyone in his colony to follow
    these rules
  • Everyone should be able to worship in their own
    way.
  • People should be treated as equals- not rich and
    poor.
  • People should have a voice in government.

Starting the Colony
  • Penn and 100 settlers arrived on a ship called
the Welcome. They had no food or shelter when
    they landed.
  • The Delaware tribe helped them to fish and grow
    crops.
  • Penn treated them as equals and even paid the
tribe and Chief Tamanend for the land that the
    king had given him.

8
Penns First Two Laws
  • The Great Law
  • All people are born equal.
  • Later included in the U.S. government
  • Frame of Government
  • General Assembly is allowed.
  • This meant people could choose others to make
rules on how the colony should be governed

9
Charter of Privileges
  • Another set of laws for the colony
  • Allowed the colony to suggest laws to England
  • Provided freedom of religion
