Harder equations

• Some linear equations you may be asked to solve
  could include decimals or brackets.
• You may be asked to solve using an unknown in the
  denominator!

Example 1

• Solve 2(5x 4) 3(x 2)
• First multiply out the brackets, to give
• 10x 8 3x 6
• Then add 8 on each side
• 10x 8 8 3x 6 8 which gives
• 10x 3x 14
• Then subtract 3x from each side
• 10x 3x 3x 3x 14 which gives
• 7x 14
• Then divide by 7 to give
• X 14 7
• So x 2

• Solve 2x 3
• Multiply each side by 3
• x 3(2x 3)
• Multiply out the bracket
• x 6x 9
• Reverse the equation to put the x-term with the
  larger positive coefficient of the left.
• 6x 9 x
