• Makes pact with Musolini, says its their axis in
  1936
• March1938 annexes Austria in what is known as the

• Britain and France complain but Hilter laughs at
  them

Sudetenland

• Fueled by the success of the Anschluss, Hitler
  aspires to annex the Sudetenland

Hitler saga continues

• Czechloslovakia had made a pact with GB and
  France who had pledged to support CZECH
  militarily.
• CZECH mobilizes their army to defend the
  Sudetenland.
• England and France back down at the last moment
  and invite Hitler to talk at the MUNICH
  CONFERENCE.
• England and France agree to appeasement and give
  Hitler his land.

Events leading to CZECH annexation
24 Apr 1938  The Nazi-aligned Sudeten German Party issued the Carlsbad Decrees, demanding autonomy for Sudetenland, Czechoslovakia.
31 Aug 1938  Winston Churchill suggested that if United Kingdom, United States, and Soviet Union collectively asserted pressure on Germany, Germany might abandon its claims for the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia he was unable to persuade fellow British politicians.
9 Sep 1938  Franklin Roosevelt announced that the United States would remain neutral on the topic of German pressures on Czechoslovakia.
28 Sep 1938  Chamberlain proposed to Hitler a conference between European powers to resolve the issue of Czechoslovakia.
29 Sep 1938  The Munich Conference between Hitler and Chamberlain became one of the world's greatest acts of appeasement in history, when Chamberlain ceded Sudetenland to Germany
30 Sep 1938  Outside 10 Downing Street in London, Neville Chamberlain announced that "I believe it is peace for our time" after returning from the Munich Conference.
15 Oct 1938  The Czechoslovakian government resigned after Germany occupied the Sudetenland.

• England and France are still attempting to stay
  neutral.
• England and France promise to help Poland if
  Poland is invaded.

Germany - Russia pact

• Germany and Russia agree not to fight by making
  the Molotov-Ribbentrop pact.
• Russia was concerned with the spread of Communism
• AS A DIRECT RESULT OF THIS PACT, Hitler invades
  Poland
• September 3, 1939 France and G.B. declare war on
  Germany.

Saar Offensive

• On September 12th, the French invaded Germany.
• Retreated on September 13th after advancing 5
  miles.
• Were trying to draw troops away from Poland
