Title: Expanding Capacity in the Service Learning Community
1Expanding Capacity in the Service Learning
Community
Kelsey McPherson Kim Sullivan Blaine Cardali
Our Project is designed to expose the students of
the high school and junior high school to more
community service opportunities. Our goal is to
branch out to the junior high school and give
incoming freshman (eighth graders) the
opportunity of accumulating up to ten hours of
community service that will count towards their
community service requirement.

November 5, 2007 Dear Mr.
Bartlett This morning Ms. Cushman and I met with
three students from Brunswick High School (Kelsey
McPherson, Kim Sullivan Blaine Cardali) to
listen to their presentation regarding the
possibility of extending the service learning
program, on a voluntary basis, to the 8th grade
students at BJHS. Their presentation was well
thought out and well articulated. It has our
support. As a matter of fact, I was able to
inform them that Rick Wilson had originally set
up a program like this when he was a teacher here
many years ago. Elements of his original program
are still in place at BJHS so I have no doubt
that this proposal will receive the support of
the 8th grade teaching staff. In the near
future, these students will be contacting you to
discuss their proposal and, with your permission,
make plans to receive Board approval. Should all
that come to pass, they intend to meet with my
8th grade team leaders and make plans for
informing our current 8th graders about the
program. Sincerely, John E. Paige  Working
together to provide an equitable, rigorous
personalized education.
