13.15 Other Objects in our Solar System
2
The Moon
  • the moon orbits Earth every 27.3 days
  • the moon rotates once on its axis as it completes
    one orbit around Earth
  • as a result, we see only one side of the moon
  • The amount of illumination we see changes the
    phases of the moon

SOLAR ECLIPSE
Occurs whenever the shadow of the Moon falls on
Earths surface, the Moon is between the Sun and
the Earth.

SOLAR ECLIPSES
10
LUNAR ECLIPSE
  • an event where Earth moves directly between the
Sun and Moon so that Earth casts its shadow on
    the Moon

Eclipses
11
Asteroids
  • small, non-spherical objects that are thought to
be debris left over from the formation of the
    solar system.
  • most are in the asteroid belt found between Mars
    and Jupiter

12
Trans-Neptunian Objects
  • objects beyond the orbit of Neptune
  • found in the Kuiper Belt
  • Pluto is found in the Kuiper Belt

13
Oort Cloud
  • At the farthest reaches of the Suns
gravitational influence is a spherical cloud of
    icy fragments called Oort.

14
Comets
  • Most start in the Kuiper Belt and the Oort cloud.
  • When it gets close to the Sun, the comet is
warmed by solar radiation and the frozen
    substances become gases
  • these gases are pushed outward by solar wind and
radiation, forming a bright, glowing tail

15
Meteoroids, Meteors, and Meteorites
  • Meteoroids pieces of rock moving through space
  • Meteors a meteoroid that reaches Earths
atmosphere and burns up due to atmospheric
    friction.
  • Meteorites a meteoroid that is large enough to
pass through Earths atmosphere and reach the
ground without being totally burned up.
