1
Barbed wire
Nice job. 300/300--A
  • A history of barbed wire
  • Per.7

2
Inventors of barbed wire
  • Joseph Glidden was born in Clarendon, New York
  • In 1873 at sixty years of age he invented barbed
wire and applied for a patent
  • In 1876, Glidden sold his half of the patent to
Washburn Moen Manufacturing Company for 60,000
    and royalties.

3
How barbed wire tamed the West
  • Barbed wire made it possible for us to have
    control over the land.
  • We could have animals to let us live there at our
    houses or in pastures.

4
Making barbed wire
  • 1clean wire in acid
  • 2place wire in wire drawing frame
  • 3galvanize the wire with zinc
  • 4clean wire in acid
  • 5put wire in barbing and twisting machine

5
Barbed wire stuff to know
  • There are over 570 patented wires in the history
    of barbed wire
  • There are over 2000 variations of these patents
    that are cataloged
  • Less than 10 of all the patents are in use

6
Uses for barbed wire
  • Barbed wire was designed from a cheap material
and could be made in bulk. And it is one of the
most durable and effective means of dividing and
    controlling space and people.
  • It is important in that it controls the herding
of animals and the early settlers could make
their land distinguished from all of the rest of
the land around there. Insuring their dominance
of the Western territories in the 1800s.

7
Uses for barbed wire
  • Barbed wire also made it able to cordon off
areas of native use, force their values of
individualism on to the native population and
    exploit the land for profit.
  • But not all barbed wire is good. Some of the
free range cattle farmers put up barbed wire to
keep out the stray cattle. And that ended up in
killing thousands of head of cattle when the
    blizzards came in the winter.

8
Early barbed wire
  • One of the earliest barbed wire fences was that
of John Grenniger. He made his fence to keep out
the the range cattle from his orchard. He
included spiked metal and glass shards.

9
Uses for barbed wire today
  • Can be used for protection against animals
  • Keeps animals in a enclosed area
  • Is used in war as war wire, a very brutal kind of
    wire
  • Coiled up wire is used in jails and detention
    facilities.
