Study Abroad
  • Study Abroad has become integral to
    internationalization and globalization
    initiatives that are being planned and
    implemented here at UConn, as well as at most
    major colleges and universities across the
    country.

Global Competency
  • In higher education we need to create world
    citizens to participate, prosper and lead in the
    global marketplace of ideas, commerce and
    culture (Mike Adams, President, Farleigh
    Dickenson University, UConn 2010).

Active Global Citizens
  • The goal to foster engagement in
  • a way that as James Skelly says should be the
    raison detre of international education as a
    whole to address the serious systemic problems
    that we face as humans living on this planet
    (Lewin 31).

Study Abroad at UConn

General Information
  • Students can Study Abroad in the Fall, Spring,
    Winter Intersession, Summer or Academic Year.
  • 2.5 is the minimum GPA required.
  • Exchange programs require a 3.0 GPA.
  • Study Abroad is usually for Sophomores, Juniors
    Seniors.

Getting Credits and Grades
  • Earn UConn credit on UConn transcript.
  • Grades calculated into GPA (except some
    internships).
  • Fulfill general education, elective, minor and/or
    major requirements.
  • Save electives related courses for study abroad
    greater flexibility.
  • Minor in International/ Area Studies.

  • Language Requirements
  • Many programs are taught in English.
  • Students can take language courses to learn the
    language of the place in which they are studying.
  • Some programs require language proficiency.
  • Major/Minor/Gen Ed Requirements
  • Students can go on any approved program and
    fulfill requirements.
  • Courses can go towards the major, minor, or
    general education requirements.

How to pick a program?
  • Students should look at their needs
  • ? Program/major requirements
  • ? Language acquisition needs/requirements
  • ? Study options participate in a faculty-led
    UConn program, attend a specialized course for
    study abroad students, conduct field study,
    intern in businesses or non-profits, or enroll in
    a foreign university through exchange or direct
    enrollment.
  • ? Living options dorm, apartment, or with a
    family

Financial Aspects...
  • Programs vary in cost, and many are very
    affordable.
  • Students can use grants
  • and loans that have been awarded.
  • Scholarships and additional loans are available.
  • Dont let cost keep students from applying.

  • Studying abroad is something students should
    start thinking about soon into their college
    career.
  • Study abroad is for all majors, including those
    in humanities, social sciences, sciences,
    engineering, business, nursing, pharmacy and
    agriculture

Deadlines
  • Applications for the Spring and Wintersession are
    due October 1st.
  • Applications for the Summer are due in early
    March.
  • Applications for the Fall and Academic Year are
    due on March 15.
