Independent Clause

• Part of a sentence that expresses a complete
  thought and can stand by itself.
• Hercule Poirot is the best detective around he
  can solve any crime that he encounters
• Can be
• Joined by a comma.
• Connected with a semicolon.
• Written as a separate sentence.

Subordinate Clause

• A sentence that cannot stand alone and is not a
  complete sentence.
• When I walked into our apartment
• Subordinating clauses must have
• Subordinating conjunctions (after, although, as,
  because, before, even though, since, than,
  unless, when, while)
• Relative pronouns (who, which)
