Genocide
  • United States Congress in 2004 declared the
    situation in Darfur a genocide
  • the deliberate and systematic extermination of
    a national, racial, political, or cultural
    group.

Help is on the way?!?
  • 7,000 African Union Troops deployed to lead peace
    talks and mediate conflict - AMIS serve as
    observers - no mandate to protect citizens.
    Sudan reluctantly accepted.
  • Some camps set up for the displaced, only half
    receive aid - shortage of essential resources.

    peacekeeping mission implemented 2007-08

  • Bush Administration pushed for funding for
    man-power and resources (20,000 peace keepers
    with a more appropriate mandate/objective)
