African Slavery
  • More empowered

  • People saw their groups as a family and also
    sought to assimilate new people
  • Based on relationships
  • Others based on factory mentality

Trans-Saharan Slave trade
  • 10th Century
  • 6000 7000 slaves traded per year
  • Eventually 7 million
  • Slaves quickly assimilated
  • Used mostly as servants rather than laborers
  • Limited Demographic Effect
  • Some women were concubines and males were eunuchs

Arabian/Indian Slave Trade
  • Pre-16th Century most slaves exported from East
    Africa to Arabian Peninsula
  • Initially only a few thousand per year
  • Zanzibar
  • Captured by Arabs who did venture to the interior
    of the continent
  • Preferred women over men
  • Used as slaves for household use or sexual use
    rather than plantation
  • Indian
  • Used for plantation work
  • Increase with better ships (10,000s per year)

  • Began in 16th century to provide labor for
    Portuguese sugar plantations
  • Increasing colonization of the Americas,
    especially South America, increase the need for
    labor
  • Brazil for mining and farming
  • Roughly 12 million shipped and 10.5 survived
  • Peaked at 90,000 per year
  • Some were shipped to South Africa
