Title: Our Goals

1
Our Goals
  • Minimize injuries while remaining productive.
  • Promote the memory of the Integrated Safety
Management for travelers as they leave Fermilab
    for the remote site.
  • Communicate to our staff that we care very much
about their well being while on travel.

2
Some Root Causes of Travel Related Safety
Incidents.
  • Restrictions constraints of long-haul flights.
  • Strain of dealing with heavy baggage.
  • Exhaustion time pressure at remote sites.
  • Peer pressure at remote sites.
  • Not fully aware of remote site hazards.
  • Communication difficulty at remote sites.

3
Actual Incidents
  • Trips falls due to exhaustion and struggling
    with bags.
  • Trips and falls due to peer pressure to hike in
    unfamiliar and difficult terrain.
  • Thrombosis induced from long periods of
    restricted movement on international flights.
  • Mugging assault (conference in Rio de Janeiro)

4
Insurance Metrics issues.
  • All travelers are covered with their nominal
    medical and workers compensation insurance.
  • Incident Metrics are more complex
  • Not work related.
  • First Aid e.g., Band-aids, tylenol.
  • Recordable. e.g, Sutures, prescription
    meds.
  • DART Days Away, Restricted, or
    Transferred

5
Metrics While on Travel
  • The work-related travel interval is from the
travelers home front door to the front door of
the remote residencee.g., injuries inside of
your hotel room are not work related.
  • The work-place resumes at the meeting or remote
worksite e.g., injuries while walking to the
meeting/worksite are not work related, injuries
while at dinner are not work related, etc.

6
What We Should Communicate.
  • We are not focused on metrics. We are focused on
minimizing injuries and the well being of
    travelers.
  • If travelers do get hurt, their injury is
compensable from a workers' comp standpoint, and
their medical bills will be paid by the
    Laboratory.
