Title: THE WEB OF LIFE

1
THE WEB OF LIFE
  • ALL ORGANISMS INTERACT BOTH WITH THEIR
    ENVIRONMENT AND WITH OTHER ORGANISMS

2
The Web Of Life
  • This red fox is dependent on many things in its
    environment.
  • What examples of living things is the fox
dependent on that might be in photo?

3
The Web Of Life
  • What are examples of nonliving things that the
fox might be dependent on in this photo?

4
ECOSYSTEM
  • An ecosystem is all the living things and non
living things in a particular area

5
Biotic Vs. Abiotic
  • The nonliving portion of an ecosystem is the
abiotic all the living is the biotic

6
The Web Of Life
  • Much as the strands of silk in a spiders web
bind one segment to another, feeding and other
interactions bind all organisms to one another.
  • These complex network of interactions between
living things are called the web of life.

7
Humans Are Part Of The Web Of Life
  • Humans have the greatest impact of any living
thing on the web of life
  • If humans are to continue to thrive on earth, we
must understand the interrelationships among all
living things and modify our actions.

8
Organisms Interact With Organisms They Eat
  • Grasshopper chews on a leaf
  • As it jumps from one leaf to next it gets caught
    in a spiders web
  • The spider kills and eats grasshopper

9
What need connects organisms based on who they
eat?
  • Need for energy to live and to reproduce
  • Need for nutrients to build more living tissue

10
Photosynthesis is important in the web of life
  • Green plants capture energy from the sun and use
    it to make food

11
These Interactions are repeated everyday
  • Animals that eat plants or other animals get
    energy indirectly

12
Web is very complex
  • Caterpillars eat the plant
  • How does that affect the grasshopper?

13
Web is very complex
  • Without rain, the plant may die
  • How would that affect the caterpillar and the
    grasshopper?
  • Spider web might trap the grasshopper. How does
that affect the plant and the caterpillar?
  • A bird might eat the spider, or the grasshopper,
    or the caterpillar

14
The smallest chain in the web can have a major
effect on the connected organisms
  • Think of how humans impact the web

15
Organisms also interact with nonliving things in
their environment
  • List some nonliving things in environment that
    living things interact with
  • Sun
  • Temperature
  • Soil
  • Rainfall

16
TERMINOLOGY
  • Nonliving material within an environment is
    called abiotic factors.
  • Living things are called biotic factors.
  • All the living things in a particular area is
    called a community.
  • The community (biotic factors) plus the abiotic
    factors is called the ecosystem.
