  • Organized temperance movement (against alcohol)
  • Eventually leads to Prohibition

Seneca Falls Convention
  • Organized in 1848 by Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth
    Cady Stanton
  • Read Declaration of Sentiments
  • Modeled after Declaration of Independence
  • all men and women are created equal
  • Listed injuries on the part of men towards
    women
  • After this event, rise of womens movement
    fighting for womens rights, especially right to
    vote

Fight for Suffrage Begins
  • Many women angered at 15th Amendment giving
    African-Americans right to vote
  • 1890--National American Woman Suffrage
    Association created
  • Lead by Susan B. Anthony
  • Alice Paul organizes more radical protests
  • Some states begin to grant women right to vote
  • Still need for national amendment

The Push for the 19th Amendment
  • Women played key role in WWI--worked in
    factories, volunteered for military, worked in
    Red Cross
  • Because of this, push for suffrage grew
  • Believed women should be recognized for help in
    war
  • Under Woodrow Wilson, Congress passed the 19th
    Amendment in 1919, ratified by states in 1920.
