What is a thesis statement?

• A thesis statement declares what you believe and
  intend to prove in your essay.
• A thesis statement generally comes at the end of
  your introduction (more on intros later).
• It is a clear, specific, and focused one-sentence
  statement of your belief.
• If it is in response to a question, it should
  clearly respond to the question. Same with
  prompts.

Characteristics of an effective thesis statement

• It declares what you believe. You take a clear
  position in response to the question.
• It is specific and focused.
• It causes the reader to ask how or why?
• It is a statement that people can agree or
  disagree with.
• It is a statement that you can justify and defend
  with reasons, evidence, and examples.
