What is an historical thesis?

• It is an answer to the question.
• Usually one sentence.
• Usually at the end of the introductory paragraph.
• Approximately 25 words.

The Road Map

• Your thesis should be an abridged answer to the
  question.
• It should set up the rest of the essay and the
  essay should follow the format of the thesis.
• Example
• Thesis answer, supporting info A, supporting info
  B, supporting info C.
• Paragraph A with supporting facts
• Paragraph B with supporting facts
• Paragraph C with supporting facts
• Conclusion

What is an historical thesis IS NOT

• It does not restate the question.
• It does not just give a one word answer.
• Yes/no
• Good/bad
• Right/wrong
• It is not the entire introductory paragraph.
• It is not a different answer than the essay
  supports.

Thesis example

• Who is your favorite college football team?
• Notre Dame is my favorite football team because
  of their long time tradition of winning, their
  locale, and their national status. (21)
• Knute Rockne and the Four Horsemen, 1924
• They are an Indiana team, I live in Indiana
• They have won 8 National Championships from the
  AP polls (the most of any team), and 3 National
  Championships from the coaches polls (third only
  to USC and Oklahoma).
