Romanticism
  • This period in literature is known as the period
    of Romanticism. Romanticism is characterized by
    a greater emphasis on nature, the individual, and
    expressing a variety of emotions.

  • Promoted a sense of nationalism because they were
    the 1st truly American writers.

Transcendentalism
  • Philosophical literary movement that
    emphasized living a simple life and celebrated
    the truth found in nature and in personal emotion
    imagination

Hudson River School
  • Art from this time period also helped to promote
    a sense of Nationalism. The Hudson River School
    was a group of artists who attempted to show
    American superiority by painting landscapes or
    scenes of the natural beauty.

James Fenimore Cooper
  • Most of his novels were set in a frontier setting
    that emphasized the individual spirit of
    Americans. His best known work is the Last of
    the Mohicans.

Ralph Waldo Emerson
  • His works focus on the importance of
    self-reliance and he is the Father with
    Transcendentalism.
  • Transcendentalism emphasizes a love of nature and
    the individual.

Henry David Thoreau
  • Another famous Transcendentalist. He is also
    noted for his belief of civil disobedience. He
    uses civil disobedience to protest Americas war
    with Mexico. His writings and accomplishments
