What is CIRCLE?
Climate Impact Research Coordination for a Larger
Europe - Mediterranean Group

  • A European Networking
  • project aiming at implementing a European
Research Area (ERA) in the field of climate
change and adaptation research, funded by the EU
    - FP6 programme
  • 35 organisations representing
  • 19 countries as  partners
  • 13 countries as  observers

3
Objectives
Climate Impact Research Coordination for a Larger
Europe - Mediterranean Group

  • Aims at establishing cooperation among national
    programmes of European countries
  • By promoting information exchange, alignment of
research agenda's and the setting up of
    trans-national research calls

Europe - Mediterranean Group

  • Idea behind theGROUP concept
  • Similar sets of impacts
  • Possibly joint implementation of
    adaptation measures

    integrated water management.
  • Five funding partners from France, Galicia,

The projects
Climate Impact Research Coordination for a Larger
Europe - Mediterranean Group

  • ACIDBIV The integrated impacts of marine
    acidification, temperature and precipitation
changes on bivalve coastal biodiversity and
    fisheries how to adapt?
  • AQUIMED Participatory design of adaptive
    groundwater management strategies and instruments
in Mediterranean coastal water scarce areas as a
    response to climate change
  • CANTICO Climate and local ANthropogenic drivers
and impacts for the TunisIan COastal area.
  • CLIMBIOMEDNET Climate change influence on
biodiversity, goods and services of Mediterranean
    lagoons.
  • CLIMWAT Assessing and managing the impact of
climate change on coastal groundwater resources
    and dependent ecosystems.
  • INTERMED The impact of climate change on
    Mediterranean intertidal communities losses in
    coastal ecosystem integrity and services.
  • MEDCODYN Climate change impacts in transitional
    water systems in the Mediterranean.
  • WATERKNOW Integrated Water Management in Coastal
    Drainage Basins challenges and adaptation
strategies within the framework of climate
    change.

Europe - Mediterranean Group

10
Policy Issues
Climate Impact Research Coordination for a Larger
Europe - Mediterranean Group

  • To facilitate uptake by decision-makers, the
project results will be linked to the relevant
climate change impact and adaptation policy
    issues.
  • Examples
  • socio-economic response to Climate Change
  • risks management/vulnerability assessment
  • stakeholders participation

11
Tools Synergies
Climate Impact Research Coordination for a Larger
Europe - Mediterranean Group

  • At the kickoff meeting, there was a demand for
exchange of information between the projects on
tools and facilities that will be used or that
    are available for use
  • Several projects will have the possibility to
    cooperate and develop synergies

12
Coordination Support
Climate Impact Research Coordination for a Larger
Europe - Mediterranean Group

  • VERSeau Développement appointed
  • as coordinator
  • Website www.circle-med.net
  • Trimestrial Newsletter
  • Midterm conference (end 2009 or early 2010)
  • Final Conference (end 2010 or early 2011)
  • Thematic workshops, brochures

13
CIRCLE-CIRCE
Climate Impact Research Coordination for a Larger
Europe - Mediterranean Group

  • CIRCE a large transnational project
  • CIRCLE MED 8 multinational projects
  • Some issues, study sites, or partners are common
    to both
  • Best ways to exchange information on activities
    and results to be determined
