• Verbal Irony occurs when you say one thing but
  mean the opposite.

• Situational Irony occurs when you expect one
  thing to happen, but the opposite happens.
• Example

From Night - The Germans were already in our
town, the Fascists were already in power, the
verdict was already out and the Jews of Sighet
were still smiling. (p. 10)

• Dramatic Irony occurs when the audience knows
  more information than the characters.
• Example

From Night - Yes, we even doubted his
(Hitlers) resolve to exterminate us. (p.
8) People thought this was a good thing. We
could no longer have to look at all of those
hostile faces, endure those hate-filled stares.
No more fear. No more anguish. We would live
among Jews, among brothers . . . (p. 12)

Simile/Metaphor

• Simile a comparison of dissimilar things using
  like or as.
• Example

From Night --- Physically, he was as awkward as
a clown (p. 3) The news spread through Sighet
like wildfire. (p. 9) The courtyard turned into
something like an antechamber to an operating
room. (p. 13)

• Metaphor comparison of dissimilar things
  without using like or as.
• Example

From Night --- On the seventh day of Passover,
the curtain finally rose the Germans arrested
the leaders of the Jewish community. (p.
10) From that moment on, everything happened
very quickly. The race toward death had begun.

Parenthetical Comment

• A statement or aside placed in parentheses to
  comment on the material being described
• Usually reveals the authors true feelings on the
  information.
• Example

From Night --- The yellow star? So what? Its
not lethal . . . (Poor father! Of what then did
you die?) (p. 11)
