  • -Has the form of a letter, debate, essay, or
    article.
  • -is about an issue/problem facing society.
  • -has a viewpoint or opinion about the issue.
  • -has evidence/facts/reasons that support the
    viewpoint.
  • -has arguments for (pro) or against (con) the
    issue.

Pre-Reading (before you read)
  • Use the title to make a prediction about the
    text.
  • Use charts, pictures, graphs, and other text
    features to guide or change your prediction.
  • Think about the topic and use your background
    knowledge to prepare for special vocabulary.

During reading
  • Use a highlighter to find the authors viewpoint
    or opinion about the issue.
  • Highlight facts/evidence/arguments/reasons that
    support the authors viewpoint.
  • Identify the counter-argument(s).

After reading(You should be able to answer the

  • What is the authors viewpoint?
  • What is the evidence the author uses to support
    his/her viewpoint?

  • Be sure the issue or topic is something you
    believe in or strongly agree with.

  • Introduction (1st paragraph)
  • Body (2nd-4th paragraphs)

  • Describe the topic/issue
  • Give some background information about the
    topic/issue
  • Should hook the reader into wanting to read more.
  • States the viewpoint about the issue or give the
    thesis statement.
  • THESIS STATEMENT-the main idea about an issue
    from the authors viewpoint.
