Title: Natural User Interfaces and Usability Studies

1
Natural User Interfaces and Usability Studies
  • Janusz Sobecki

2
Agenda
  • Introduction
  • Interaction styles
  • Natural user interfaces
  • Usability studies
  • Eye tracking
  • Engine HCI research

3
Introduction
  • The value of todays systems are dependent of
    their usability and UX quality,
  • Natural user interfaces (NUI) are one of the
interaction styles that are getting mora and more
    popular
  • Aplication of NUI requires not only application
of new types of input and output devices but also
application of the new ways of design and
    usability veryfication

4
Interaction styles
  • Interaction styles represent alternative design
strategies for the user interface (UI)
  • Each style defines its own way of organizing the
    system functionality
  • We can distinguish at least several interaction
    styles categories

5
Interaction styles categories
  • Key-modal
  • Menu-based interaction
  • Question-and-answer
  • Function-key interaction
  • Voice-based interaction
  • Direct manipulation
  • Graphical direct manipulation
  • Forms fill-in
  • Linguistic
  • Command-line interaction
  • Text-based natural language
  • Virtual Reality
  • Natural User Interfaces

6
Virtual reality definitions
  • VR is an immersive and interactive simulation of
either reality-based or imaginary images and
    scenes
  • VR is a means of visualization, manipulation and
interaction of a man-user with computers and
    complex data
  • VR is something not formal and not real,
however something that is true and existing
  • VR is an application using different technologies
such as HMD (Head Mounted Display), Glove Input
Device, Body Suit and Auditory Devices

7
Natural User Interfaces
  • NUI is a system for HCI that the user operates
through intuitive actions related to natural,
    everyday human behavior
  • NUI may be operated in many different ways,
depending on the purpose and user requirements
  • NUI may rely on intermediary devices for
interaction, which are sometimes invisible to the
user or so unobtrusive that they quickly seem
    invisible

8
Examples of NUIs
  • Touch screens
  • Kinetic interfaces
  • Speach recognition systems
  • Brain-machne interfaces

9
Usability
  • Usability of a product, according to ISO 9241-11,
is the extent to which the product can be used by
specific users to achieve specific goals with
effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction in a
    specific context of use.
  • Effectiveness expresses the accuracy and
completeness with which users achieve specified
    goals
  • Efficiency considers the resources expended in
relation to the accuracy and completeness with
    which users achieve goals
  • Satisfaction reveals the users comfort and
    acceptability of use

Usability veryfication methods
  • There have been developed many different methods,
which may be applied on different stages of the
    system development

12
Popular methods
  • One of the most popular methods applied in the
    Test and measure phase are
  • Diagnostic evaluation is user based evaluation of
a working system, where the primary objective is
    to identify usability problems
  • Heuristic evaluation where usability specialists
judge whether each element of a user interface
follows a list of established usability heuristics

13
Eyetracking
  • Eyetracking is used as a meas of additonal method
    o the diagnostic evaluation
  • Eyetracking - process of measuring either the
point of gaze ("where we are looking") or the
motion of an eye relative to the head
  • Eyetracker - device for measuring eye positions
    and eye movement

14
Pupil and CR detection
15
Eyetracking devices (ASL, Tobii, SMI)
Tobii X2-60 Eyetracker
SMI 6D glasses
ASL Pan/Tilt i Head mounted tracker
16
Eyetracking analysis
  • Gazetrail, heatmap, active regions

17
HCI Engine research
  • Development of the new methods of interactions in
    Augmented Reality
  • Development of the new VR devices
  • Deveoplent of the new usability veryfication
    methods for natural interfaces
  • We have already cooperate with industry (i.e.
Aduma S.A.) and academia (University of Tampere,
The E. Geppert Academy of Art and Design and
    Uniersity of Wroclaw)
