  • Cellular Data Market - Forecast
  • TDMA Data Services - Operator Value
  • The Digital Data and Fax Service
  • The Direct Access Service

3
Why should TDMA operators invest in 2nd
generation wireless data solutions?
4
The first developing expertise in 2nd generation
wireless data solutions will be the winner with
3rd generation wireless data solutions.
3rd Generation
2nd Generation
5
Cellular Data Market Forecast (1/3)
  • US
  • The total number of cellular data users in the US
will increase from 1.9 million in 1998 to 28
    million in 2003.
  • The proportion of all cellular users using data
    services (messaging, information services, or
remote access applications) will increase from
2.7 to 21 over the period.
  • By 2003, US cellular data revenues are expected
    to reach US 2.6 billion.

6
Cellular Data Market Forecast (2/3)
  • Western Europe
  • The total number of cellular data users in
Western Europe will increase from 3.5 million in
    1998 to 51 million in 2003.
  • The proportion of all cellular users using data
    services (messaging, information services, or
remote access applications) will increase from 4
    to 25 over the period.
  • By 2003, Western European cellular data revenues
are expected to reach US7.4 billion.

Strategy Analytics, December 1998
7
Cellular Data Market Forecast (3/3)
  • Messaging
  • SMS text messaging
  • E-mail notification
  • Full or partial E-mail transmission
  • Information Services
  • Delivery of content (e.g. weather, sports,
    banking)
  • Remote Access
  • Company database access (LANs, Intra/Extranet)
  • WWW browsing
  • Personal banking and mobile commerce
    transaction-based applications
  • Fixed Applications

TDMA Data Services - Operator Value
  • Capture wireless data market share
  • Build operators brand image (new services,
    Internet Access, )
  • Limit churn
  • Build competence in data services deployment
  • Information collected during commercial life of
2nd generation data solutions will be an
invaluable source for deploying 3rd generation
data solution (traffic, capacity, pricing models,
    marketing, )

9
Corporate LAN access
The Digital Data and Fax Service
e-mail
Mobile commerce
10
TDMA Digital Data and Fax Service
  • provides a circuit switched data access over the
Digital Traffic Channel (DTC) air interface
  • supports a maximum uncompressed user data rate of
    9.6kbps
  • supports data compression over the air interface
    (V.42bis)
  • interworks with all popular standard landline
modems and fax protocols (e.g. Data V.34,
    V.32bis, Fax V.29, V.27ter, )
  • provides data privacy over the air interface
    (encryption)
  • supports automatic roaming
  • supports seamless handoff

11
System Requirements for Digital Data and Fax
  • Mobile supporting IS-130, IS-135 and IS-136-A
    required (Ericsson T18d)
  • Digital base station required (884, 882D, 882DM)
  • TRAB2 (or "higher) located in the MSC
  • DTIs required in each MSC providing the Digital
    Data and Fax service
  • IS-737 Inter-node (MSC-HLR) signaling required
(changes to IS-41-C to support Circuit Switched
    Data and G3Fax)
  • Data encryption requires that the Authentication
Center shares the SSD with the MSCs
  • For mobile terminating calls from PSTN, Ericsson
supports Two Stage Dialing in the MSC.

Data Transmission Interworking (DTI) - Overview
(1/5)
13
Data Transmission Interworking (DTI) - Overview
(2/5)
14
Data Transmission Interworking (DTI) - Overview
(3/5)
  • RPBU Regional Processor Bus Unit.
  • Connects the parallel RP bus to the DTI for RP
    bus redundancy
  • PRO20 This is the Regional Processor Device
    (RPD)
  • Stores the code for the TR PBA
  • Performs surveillance of the HW
  • Gateway for signaling between the Central
Processor (CP) and Device Processors (DP) of the
    TR PBA

15
Data Transmission Interworking (DTI) - Overview
(4/5)
  • GSIB Group Switch Inter Bus.
  • Provide two DL-2 connections to the Group Switch
    (GS)
  • Interface between PRO20 and TR PBAs
  • TR PBA Traffic Printed Board Assembly
  • Contains the Device Processors (DPs) which
    perform the interworking functions.

16
Data Transmission Interworking (DTI) - Overview
(5/5)
  • A fully equipped DTI magazine has 8 TR boards
  • Each TR board can handle 4 calls
  • For full redundancy, 2 DTI magazine are needed
  • The number of DTI magazines is only limited by
the number of available RP bus addresses (max
    1024)

22
TDMA Direct Access Service (1/3)
23
TDMA Direct Access Service (2/3)
  • Provide internet access to TDMA-136 subscribers
  • Offers faster call set-up and response times
compared to calls placed through the PSTN
  • Opens up new business opportunities for TDMA
    operators
  • to offer Internet and Intranet access services
  • to become an Internet Service Provider
  • Operators can achieve savings on interconnection
fees by transporting data traffic on data
networks (instead of using PSTN and PLMN)
  • TCP/IP access offered using one network (vs PSTN
    and PLMN)

24
TDMA Direct Access Service (3/3)Protocols
overview
25
The wireless data call is initiated...
the dialed digits are received in the MSC ...
digits are analyzed and the call is setup to
the access server
the access server converts the circuit
switched connection to packet switched ...
ATD 4444 514 345 7900
26
the user accesses a service LAN ...
Internet/Intranet information is accessed.
27
Direct Access System Requirements
  • Access servers required in the network
  • The Digital Data and Fax MSC software needs to be
    active
  • The Direct Access MSC software needs to be active
  • ISUP signaling required in the network

28
TDMA Standards (1/2)
TIA/EIA-136 TDMA Radio Interface (136
DTC) TIA/EIA-136-310 TDMA Wireless Systems
Radio Link Protocol 1 (RLP1, previously
IS-130-A) link establishment, link supervision,
data qualification, data compression, encryption,
flow control TIA/EIA-130-350 TDMA Wireless
Systems Data Service Control (previously
IS-135-0) User-Network commands and responses
29

IS-737 Changes to IS-41-C to support the
Asynchronous Data Service, Data Privacy and Group
3 Facsimile Service IS-728 TDMA Intersystem
Link Protocol (ISLP) ISLP adapts between
air-interface data rates and higher-speed
intersystem rates. DNP DNP specifies ERICSSON
proprietary protocols common to all internal and
external communication links for the TRAB2.
