Title: The Scientific Method
1The Scientific Method
2The Scientific Method
- the ONLY scientific way accepted to prove or
disprove a theory or idea. - ALL research projects should be based on this
method
3The Scientific Method
Dont write down The Scientific Method
involves 6 steps Observation Purpose/Problem/Que
stion Hypothesis (why) Materials Procedures Analys
is/Result Conclusion
4The Scientific Method
Observation- You observe something in the
material world, using your senses or
machines. Ex. you see that the plant is dying
AHLook at this!
5The Scientific Method
Question/Problem- You ask a question about what
you observe. Ex. Why is the plant dying when
it is watered everyday?
6The Scientific Method
Hypothesis- testable explanation for the details
you observed your inference. Ex. If you water
the plant once a week, then it will be healthy.
7The Scientific Method
Materials - items needed for experiment Procedure
Steps to follow in the experiment.
8The Scientific Method
The experiment consists of testing
variables Independent variable(manipulated)-this
variable is changed by you Ex. how often you
water Dependent variable(responding)-this
variable responds to the change Ex. the growth
of the plant Constants - all pieces of the
experiment are the same Ex. the pots, sunlight,
placement on window Control what is possibly
causing the problem what the scientist controls
to test the hypothesis Ex. the water
9The Scientific Method
Lab Safety what safety procedures need to be
used Ex. goggles
10The Scientific Method
- Analysis/Result- your results of the experiment
the numbers and/or outcomes should be in a data
table and graphed. - Graph DRY MIX
- dependent/responding variable on y-axis
- manipulated/independent variable on x-axis
- title
- key (if necessary)
-
11The Scientific Method
Conclusion- You state whether your prediction
was confirmed or not and try to explain your
results in paragraph form. Ex. the plant only
needed watering once a week --summarize results
with words --was hypothesis correct and if not,
then how could you improve the next trial --did
you repeat experiment (trials) and why --does
this experiment lead to more questions
12Summarize Cornell Notes
Write 4 sentences summarizing your notes. --look
back through them if you have to --MUST BE IN
PARAGRAPH FORM!!
