• Writers follow a set of steps as they write.
• The steps appear strict, but writers jump back to
  earlier stages as they work.

Prewriting

• Mental warm-up
• Gathering ideas to find a topic

What happens during Prewriting?

• Choose a topic
• Narrow your topic. You need a focus!
• Determine your audience.
• Examples females, football fans, children
  under ten, Bob
• Determine your purpose.
• Examples to persuade, to entertain, to inform

What happens during Prewriting?

• 5. Complete an organizer
• Examples Web, sensory chart

Drafting

• Getting your ideas down on paper
• Rough format of the final draft

What happens during Drafting?

• Find a controlling idea so your paper has
  coherence
• Make sure the paper has organization so your
  communication is clear.
• Example Transition words (however, in
  conclusion, in contrast)
• 3. Elaborate your details!
• BONUS! Pull in readers with an exciting hook!

Revising

• Correcting major errors
• Improving the writings form and content
• Major paper surgery

What Happens During Revising?

• Check for word variety (use a thesaurus)
• The cool party was cool. We ate cool food and
  drank cool drinks.
• Vary sentence length
• Try not to repeat sentence beginnings.
• OMG! N2SBWTSW! No two sentences begin with the
  same word! ROTFL!

Editing and Proofreading

• Polishing the writing by correcting errors in
  grammar, spelling, and mechanics.
• Minor surgery.

• Check for conventions
• Examples spelling, punctuation, capitals,
  completeness of sentences, and usage
