Title: TRANSPORTATION TUESDAY

1
TRANSPORTATION TUESDAY
  • The five seeing habits
  • while driving.

Observation and concentration are required at all
times while driving. You need to be aware of the
road and traffic conditions if you want to avoid
an accident! Observing helps you decide how to
drive. If you notice that traffic is congested
ahead, you need to slow down and ensure you
have enough space to escape Lets read further
and review the five seeing habits that most
drivers adapt
2
1 - Look far ahead
  • Look as far down the road as possible to uncover
important traffic and road conditions, so that
you make the right decision as you drive along.
Look for curves and be prepared for any hazards.
  • Looking beyond does not mean you stop paying
attention to things that are closer. Good drivers
shift their attention back forth, near far.
  • Here is what you need to do
  • Be ready to take action.
  • Be prepared based on what you see.
  • Plan your action for the conditions
  • ahead.

2 - Look around
  • Look around and get the big picture. Do not
succumb to tunnel vision, as you
  • need to know what is happening around you.
  • Are drivers preparing to change lanes? Are cars
merging from right or left? Are there people
    crossing the street? Are speeding
  • vehicles following close behind you? Look
  • to find out.

Know it all so that you are ready to react!

3 - Keep your eyes moving..
Keep your eyes moving and dont stare! Check your
mirrors to keep up with traffic conditions. Check
it regularly so that you dont miss any action!
Bear in mind When changing lanes you need to
make sure you have enough room. Prior to
signalling, you should check to see if your path
is clear and no one has moved into your blind
spot. When caught in a tight spot, manoeuvring
is a little difficult. Make use of your
mirrors. Remember active eyes keep you updated!
5
4 - See if you have enough space..
  • Make sure you have enough space all around your
vehicle, just in case you need to make a sudden
    escape.
  • Sometimes when we leave space, other drivers take
it for granted and the tendency is not to leave
space at all, but remember, leaving space gives
you time to think and to take action.
  • Leave space in front. When you stop make sure you
leave adequate space and you are able to see the
    drivers rear tires!

6
5 - Can others see you?
  • Inform other road users that you are there.
Communicate with them by using your lights,
signals or horn at the appropriate time.

Pedestrians and bicyclists can be hazards. They
may not be able to see you. Let them know that
you are approaching. You have to be extra careful
if children are around. Children tend to run
across the road while playing or simply when they
want to cross the street. Establishing eye
contact helps to to avoid a collision!
