Purpose
  • The goal of the Careers for Life Center (CLC) is
    to provide career development programs to entry
    level main campus employees and non-union and
    non-managerial employees employed on the main
    campus between July 1998 and Sept. 2005 who are
    seeking clinical careers in nursing, radiology
    technology or respiratory therapy.
  • More than 1 million has been committed to the
    CLC

Center Hours and Staffing
  • Hours of operation are Tuesday and Thursday from
    8am-430pm and Wednesday from 730am-11am. The
    number to the center is 313-916-4100.
  • The CLC is staffed by Zipora Golenberg through a
    partnership with Jewish Vocational Services. She
    has more than 20 years of experience providing
    career counseling, predominately in the Detroit
    area.
  • The CLC is located in the Clara Ford Pavilion on
    the 4th Floor (opposite end of HR).

Programs

Career Guidance and Counseling
  • Details This program provides assistance with
    internal job searches, skills assessments and
    training, resume and interviewing assistance, and
    general career coaching.
  • Eligibility All system employees initially, to
    be weighed heavily in favor of main campus entry
    level employees and non-union and non-managerial
    employees employed on the main campus between
    July 1998 and Sept. 2005.

Career Guidance and Counseling (continued)
  • Skills Assessments are provided for employees to
    assist in determining skill level in the areas of
    reading and math. These can be requested by
    interested employees but are required for
    individuals who have not obtained a HS diploma or
    GED and/or have not successfully completed at
    least two college level courses.
  • Participants will receive a meal pass on the day
    of the testing and receive a one-time taxable
    stipend of 25 at the completion of the entire
    assessment.
  • Partnership We have teamed with FocusHOPE to
    provide the skills assessment and are currently
    developing the subsequent training courses. We
    anticipate creating the first training course by
    the end of this year.

Professional Development Programs(PDPs)
  • Details The PDPs provide pathways for employees
    to obtain a Career for Life in the critically
    short, market sensitive positions of nursing,
    radiology technology, and respiratory therapy.
    Participants will be assisted in earning degrees,
    provided intense careers counseling, and receive
    financial support.
  • Additional benefits include
  • Monthly stipends of 400 (50 if part-time)
  • Reduced work hours while maintaining benefit
    level
  • Home computer, if needed
  • Tuition assistance (tuition reimbursement and
    remainder of program tuition paid directly to
    school)

  • Eligibility Main campus entry level employees
    and non-union and non-managerial employees
    employed on the main campus between July 1998 and
    Sept. 2005 who have been accepted into an
    accredited program in one of the three targeted
    job areas.
  • Participants have to have been employed with the
    system for at least one year and must have
    received (minimally) a commendable rating on
    their most recent performance review.

Mentoring and Coaching
  • Details This program is designed to provide
    support and assistance to help participants
    propel their careers forward by matching them
    with main campus system leaders. Participants
    will have the opportunity to participate in
    workshops focusing on career enhancement, skill
    building and formal coaching. There will be
    approximately 20-25 mentor/mentee pairs per year.
    We are currently evaluating expressions of
    interest from vendors and following up on
    internal leads for an external consultant to
    develop this program.
  • Eligibility Main campus entry level employees
    and non-union and non-managerial employees
    employed on the main campus between July 1998 and
    Sept. 2005 are eligible to participate in the
    program.
