Title: Editing Styles

1
Editing Styles
  • The pattern use of transitions, matches, or
duration can id a cinematic style.

2
Duration
  • Establishing a fast/slow rhythm of a scene
  • Creating gaps between Diegetic time and screen
    time.
  • Long Take shot that takes an unusual length of
time before transitioning to the next.
  • Overlap Editing Cuts that repeat part or all of
    an action
  • Rhythm Rate and regularity of sounds, series of
shots, and movements within a shot.

3
Continuity Editing
  • A system of cutting to maintain continuous and
    clear narrative action
  • The film supports the viewer's assumption that
space and time are contiguous between successive
    shots
  • This sense of a consistent space is reinforced by
the use of techniques such as the eyeline match
    or match on action.

4
Montage
  • A collection of clips that are related in someway
    but are edited together randomly.
  • Montage
  • Often these are used in movie trailers or
    compilation videos.

5
Matte Shot
  • Similar to that of Photo-shopping two unlike
    images together.
  • This gives you the ability to place a real object
    in an unreal location.

6
Elliptical Editing
  • Shot transitions that omit parts of an event
causing and ellipses in plot and story duration.
    - dissolves and jump cuts are used often through
    this type of editing.
  • Editing that is not in sequential order of the
    story.
