Title: Soccer: Not so popular in the US

1
SoccerNot so popular in the US
  • By Jesus Guzman
  • And
  • Thalia Ochoa

2
What is Soccer?
  • For people who live under rocks, or just dont
like soccer here are some facts
  • It began in England at around 1863, this was the
    first association
  • Soccer was played by ancient people like the
    Chinese, Japanese, and Indian.
  • There are 11 players per team for multiple
    positions.

3
So, whats the word of the street?
  • Not surprisingly, out of a survey of 2,109 adults
asking if Soccer would ever beat other More
popular sports, 54 said it wasnt likely going
    to happen

4
The Numbers tell a different Story
  • Just because people say it wont happen, the
    numbers tell a different story
  • The 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany had a total
cumulative television audience of 26.29 billion
    (24.2 billion in-home and 2.1 billion out-of-home
    viewers), (CNSnews.com Terence)
  • That said, the numbers show world wide not the US

5
HmmIs this why its unpopular?
  • Many people that blog and such had a distinct
    point of view
  • The sport is low scoring, meaning that numbers
are relatively low, unlike basketball which has
    100 plus score
  • Many people say that, There is not the same
amount of strategy as football and basketball
    (USAtoday.com, della Cava)

6
What makes soccer somewhat popular?
  • When the world cup comes around, it unites people
under one flag e.g. People tend to root for there
countries team such as Mexico and the US.
  • It is popular among Latino communities and people
  • Its a sport that requires little equipment in
    comparison with other sports

7
What does football and other sports have that
soccer doesnt?
  • While there are a multitude of teams for
basketball and football for Americans to fight
over and discuss, the US has only one teamthe US
  • Soccer is about endurance, skinny and fit men
    running non-stop for 90 minutes.
  • Football is about big bulky men tackling and
fighting it out, in other words
  • Soccer high attention span needed to few goals
  • Football low attention span as people are
    periodically pummeling each other.

8
Overall Recap
  • When compared to US sports such as NASCAR,
football, basketball etc. it falls as boring
  • Most of the excitement happens when a goal is
scored, but this does not happen as much as in
other sports because it is low scoring
  • Perfection is hard in a game like soccer,
especially when you use your feet and not your
    hands.
  • Its hard for people to enter the soccer scene,
mostly because so many dream of getting in and
    the simplicity of the game

9
Good news for soccer
  • It seems soccer might not be popular now, but it
seems it might be getting better among teens
  • From 1987 to 2000, the amount of teens playing
    baseball fell 47.
  • During those same years soccer has grown in
    popularity

10
After word
  • Although soccer may seem like it doesnt get much
attention, it seems teens are picking up the
sport than adults and that might mean soccer is
    the game of the future
  • Because of soccers simplicity it is easy to pick
up, easy enough to get into the game without
    difficulty
  • Playing soccer and watching soccer are 2 very
different things, though more people may play the
game the same cannot be said about viewing it
