Escape Planning - Protecting in Place
2
What we will learn today
  • We will talk about what to do if your house is on
fire, and you cannot get out because your exits
are blocked by fire or smoke.

3
We have already learned that
  • Need to be prepared in the event of a fire in
    your home
  • Every home should have an escape plan practiced
    by the entire family
  • Everyone should know two ways out of every room

4
  • If your smoke alarm sounds
  • Get out immediately
  • do not stop to pick anything up
  • call 9-1-1 from an outside location

5
  • Know two ways out
  • Feel doors and door knobs before opening
  • Crawl low in smoke
  • Go to your outside meeting place
  • Stay out - never go back inside

6
  • What would you do if you could not get out your
    planned exits?
  • What if smoke or fire blocked your main exit and
there was no other way out?

7
  • The fire is on the first and second floor of your
house. Your bedroom is on the other side of the
    house on the second floor.
  • You cannot go out your bedroom door because of
smoke and heat, and the window is too high to
    safely go out.
  • What do you do?

Your bedroom
8
  • If smoke is coming into your bedroom under the
    door
  • stuff clothing, towels, or sheets under the door
  • use duct tape if you have it and tape all of the
    cracks around the door
  • cover air vents

9
  • If you have a phone in your room, call 9-1-1 and
    report your location
  • If you cannot call 9-1-1
  • go to the window and signal the fire fighters
with a towel, clothing or a flashlight
  • good idea to keep a flashlight in your room for
    emergencies

10
  • Do not break the window!
  • If you can, open your window a little bit at the
top and the bottom to let fresh air in
  • If smoke comes in, close the window immediately
  • stay low under the smoke until help arrives

11
  • Do not panic!
  • Practicing your escape plans will help you know
what to do in any situation
  • Knowing what to do will help save not only your
life, but others in your family
